HAPPY (and a little belated) INDEPENDENCE DAY!! I hope you took time to celebrate the country's birthday with burgers, steaks, chicken, baked beans, potato salad and an ice cold beverage of choice! At least that's how I celebrated, minus the chicken, baked beans, potato salad and a beverage of my choosing, but still a wonderful day to be an American! While we had no fireworks here at BAF, nor delivered any to Mr. Taliban and his friends, the 4th of July was still a special day as an American serving overseas. Thinking of the sacrifices made by the Founding Fathers to establish this country is truly humbling. Here in Afghanistan, we Americans weren't always the only ones celebrating (or in the least acknowledging) it was the Fourth, some of our pilots' received Happy Independence Day messages from the French working to the east while flying, plus numerous civilians gave us 4th of July greetings as well. So I hope it was a great day for you wherever you spent it. It has been a while since I last updated what I've been doing, so I will try to catch you up as best I can.
I've been doing pretty much one thing since taking over as a Platoon Leader, and that is flying. I flew nearly 50 hours in the month of June, which nearly equaled my 6 month total from the first half of the deployment. It's definitely keeping me busy and I've recently switched to nights, so I'm sure I will continue to get some good flying in over the last few months. Being platoon leader has been an absolute blast thus far, and I have some really great enlisted guys and pilots under me, which makes my job that much easier. I am thankful to finally be in this position, and thankful for such an amazing group of soldiers to share this experience with. In other news, just last week we had an unexpected visit from some NFL coaches who were on a USO tour. They were Andy Reid (Philadephia Eagles), Brad Childress (Minnesota Vikings), John Fox (Carolina Panthers) and the best of all Marvin Lewis, coach of the Cincinatti Bengals (I am a huge Bengals fan if you didn't know that already!). We showed them around the aircraft and let them get in and check it out, then showed them a video of the unit's deployment from Iraq. It was a great time, and I was able to get autographs from all 4 gentlemen, and luckily a photo with Coach Lewis (in case there are any doubters out there ;) ). Other than that little piece of excitement, everything else has been pretty much the same. The days are ticking away, only about 7 weeks until Kim and I take on Europe for two weeks, and then after that only a couple of short months until redeployment back to Savannah. Thanks again for all the support to both Kim and I, it is always amazing to know the support chain that is out there for us. Kim, can't wait to see you so soon and thanks for being an amazing Army wife! Unfortunately my pictures are not loading today, but I will try to get some recent ones up soon. Take care and have a great week!
